Through the Eyes of Our Children—Something Beautiful showcases the work of students from several elementary schools in the South Dallas/Fair Park area of the Dallas Independent School District. Inspired to embark on personal journeys of discovery, students use photography and mixed media to capture snapshots of humanity and convey their perceptions about self, community, and social responsibility.
Since 2004, Preservation LINK has partnered with elementary school teachers to deliver the Point of View Program (POV), a twelve-week photojournalism program that has served over 450 students in several Dallas Independent School District schools. Through individual and collaborative assignments, this three-tier photojournalism course uses verbal, writing, and photographic activities to engage fifth graders in an exploration of education, community, culture, and social responsibility. As students communicate their perceptions and explore daily happenings near their homes and schools, the resulting words and images that students produce form an extraordinary documentation of our contemporary world.
This year, Preservation LINK launched its Visual Literacy Workshop (VLW), a twelve-week program engaging 4th graders in visually based activities that reinforce several Reading/Language Arts curriculum objectives. Using portrait photographs, the students were asked to create a personal mixed media project that illustrates their perceptions about character, goal setting, and social responsibility. Instructed by photographer David Herman, Jr., over seventy students from Charles Rice Learning Center, Joseph J. Rhoads Learning Center, H. S. Thompson Learning Center, and Martin Luther King Learning Center are participating in this year’s POV and VLW programs.
Students in the Visual Literacy Workshop, alongside Point of View students, will debut their work on May 14, 2010, as part of Through the Eyes of Our Children—Something Beautiful, an exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art on view through August 29, 2010. This event marks the start of a summer-long engagement during which students from both programs will lead tours of the exhibition and discuss, with peer and adult visitors to the Museum, the inspiration behind their work. Students participating in the exhibition will give gallery talks during First Tuesdays, Late Nights, and Family Celebrations at the Museum.
Providing programs since 1999, Preservation LINK, Inc. (PLI) is an education agency that has served over 700 students since its inception, providing a family of programs that offer media arts education, academic enrichment, interpersonal and professional development, and peer to peer teaching and learning.
The Dallas Museum of Art is supported in part by the generosity of Museum members and donors and by the citizens of Dallas through the City of Dallas/Office of Cultural Affairs and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
