As you might suspect, Flower Mound gets its name from a large 12.5 acre mound of wildflowers that rises 50 feet above the surrounding countryside and contains more than 175 identified species of wild flowers. The flowers have been growing on the southern edge of the town since the area was first documented in the early 1800s. The mound is assumed to date back to the Wichita Indians, and it remains protected from development by private foundation ownership today.

Flower Mound has a new high school, Flower Mound High School, as well as its original high school: Marcus High School. The district is primarily served by the Lewisville Independent School District.
